On 21 March, 2014, the Irish Studies Center of the English and International Studies School invited Professor Dermot Keogh from University College Cork to give a lecture on “Ireland and the Great War”.
With detailed content and vivid pictures, Professor Dermot Keogh introduced to the students the overall picture of the First World War, and the experience and role Ireland had during the war. The relationship between Ireland and Britain was also given a deep analysis by Professor Dermot Keogh. With his rich and beautiful language, he dealt with the lecture with profundity and an easy-to-understand approach. After the completion of the lecture, he interacted actively with the students, answering all the questions put upon him.
Professor Dermot Keogh is Professor Emeritus of History, School of History, University College Cork, Cork, Ireland, having served as head of the Department from 2002 to 2008. He studied at University College Dublin where he received his MA in 1974. His doctorate was awarded by the European University Institute Florence, in 1980. A member of the Royal Irish Academy, he has taken up the role as visiting professor in many top-class universities around the world. He has published widely on various aspects of twentieth century Irish history, particularly on the history of the Catholic Church. His major works are: “Ireland and the Vatican: The Politics and Diplomacy of Church and State”, “Jews in Twentieth Century Ireland: Refugees, Anti-semitism and the Holocaust” and so on.
