On March 26, 2014, the Irish Studies Centre of SEIS, BFSU invited Professor Jerusha Hull McCormack from UCD to give an insightful speech titled “Ireland’s World Writers & China”. Jerusha Hull McCormack is also a visiting professor at BFSU.
Professor Jerusha introduced the four famous Irish Nobel Prize laureates in Literature from three perspectives: she examined their similarities in personal life and writing, the influences of British colonization in their writing, and the relations between Irish and Chinese writers. Professor Jerusha’s lecture was both insightful and easy to understand owing to many specific examples she prepared. Also, as a professor much fascinated by Chinese culture especially Chinese literature, Professor Jerusha illustrated her recent project of comparing James Joyce’s early works with the early works of Lu Xun’s.
Jerusha Hull McCormack is a professor in the English department of UCD who has taught American literature, British literature and Anglo-Irish literature for more than 30 years. She devoted herself the most in American literature and Anglo-Irish literature in the period of 1830 to 1930. She has published five of her academic books and several academic articles, and has given many kinds of lectures. As a woman scholar, her works have a unique perspective in viewing the literary world, which is acclaimed by many contemporary critics.
