Developments in Contemporary Irish Writing

Introduction
This lecture will examine developments in contemporary Irish writing and will discuss changing social relations, economic values and attitudes to religion as reflected and shaped by a number of recent Irish writers. The writers will include poems by the current Ireland of Professor Paula Meehan and three short stories published since 2011: Colm Tóibín’s ‘The Pearlfishers’, Kevin Barry’s comic ‘Wifey Redux’ and Mary Costello’s ‘You Fill Up My Senses’.

About the Speaker
Professor Margaret Kelleher is Chair of Anglo-Irish Literature and Drama at University College Dublin, Ireland. From 2007-2012 she was founding director of An Foras Feasa: the Institute for Research in Irish Historical and Cultural Traditions, at National University of Ireland Maynooth. Her books include The Feminization of Famine (published by Duke UP and Cork UP, 1997), Gender Perspectives in Nineteenth-Century Ireland (1997; co-edited with James H Murphy), Nineteenth-Century Ireland: A Guide to Recent Research (2005; co-edited with Laurence Geary) and the two volume Cambridge History of Irish Literature (2006, co-edited with Philip O’Leary. She has published and taught widely in the areas of nineteenth-century literature, famine studies, women’s writings and cultural studies. Professor Kelleher is Chairperson of the International Association for the Study of Irish Literatures and a member of Science Europe’s Humanities Committee. She has been visiting scholar at Concordia University Montreal, University of São Paulo, Boston College, Beijing Foreign Studies University, and St John’s College, Cambridge, and in May 2015 is a visiting lecturer at Peking University.
